Modern War #19, Sept-Oct 2015

It was the Chinese scholar-historian Wei Yuan, writing in the mid-19th century, who first formally identified his nation’s apparently inescapable cycles of “chaos and humiliation” (quru), followed by “rejuvenation” (fuxiang), followed by “wealth and power” (fuqiang), and then back to quru to start again. More recently, Queens College futurist and sometimes-CIA analyst Dr. Bruce Bueno de Mosquita wrote concerning China that he sees no factors in the present-day environment working to end or deflect that same cycle. It was the shared conclusions of those two men, working over a century-and-a-half apart, which inspired me to design this wargame modeling the military parameters and possibilities inherent in the next phase of Chinese quru – civil war.

The likely starting points for such a conflict would either be the collapse of the Chinese real estate bubble – which is already broadly predicted to be inescapable and will constitute the largest financial collapse in world history – or the growing potable water crisis. (A third of the water consumed by the Chinese is undrinkable by US standards.) Beyond those factors, or in combination with them, there’s also the gender imbalance, the fossil fuel air pollution crisis, the increasingly endemic corruption, the aging population structure, the expanding rural-urban economic gap, as well as the general collapse of ideology and the resultant moral lapse throughout the populace. One, some, or all of these factors may eventually lead to a crisis in China, as so often occurs in history, resulting in a civil war.

Each turn equals two months, probably starting sometime late in this decade or early in the next. The game is designed for two players, but it is adaptable for solitaire. Each hexagon on the 34x22” map represents 80 miles from side to opposite side. Units of maneuver are brigades, divisions and group armies and air corps (in the form of 176 large-size NATO-style counters).

Components: One 22" x 34" map & 176 counters.

Operation Unthinkable is a two player alternative history wargame intended to investigate the strategic parameters that would have been in place during the first month of operations had the Anglo-Allies and Soviets gone to war against each other starting on or about July 1945. The map illustrates the militarily significant terrain found in and around this portion of Germany in 1945 when portrayed at this scale. Each hex on the map represents five miles (8 km) from side to opposite side. The Soviet units of maneuver are corps or corps equivalents (western division equivalents). Those on the Allied side are mostly divisions, along with a separate brigades and regiments. The rules abstractly represent air power with the presumption that the Allies would have unchallengeable air supremacy. Each full game turn represents half a week of real time.

Components: One 22" x 34" map & 228 counters.

Watch on the Oder: January 1945 is a hypothetical two-player game allowing the players to examine the strategic possibilities inherent in the campaign that may have taken place had Hitler decided to send the forces he used historically in the Ardennes to the eastern front. Both sides’ orders of battle are entirely historic within that context. Each of the eight game turns represents four days, and each large hex on the map equals 20 miles. The map runs from the Oder River on the west to the Riga-Pinsk line on the east. Units are German corps and Soviet armies. The turn sequence is I-Go-U-Go, but both players decide if their force will move and fight or fight and move. Playing time is about three hours, and is easily adapted for solitaire play. Complexity is low-medium. The German has to strike hard and fast at the beginning in order to weaken the inevitable Soviet counteroffensive.

Components: 22x34 inch map, 128 die-cut counters.

"The Bulge" is a re-design/re-development of SPI's The Big Red One: The Game of the First Infantry Division at the Battle of the Bulge (1979) (subsequently rereleased as "The Big Red One" in 1980).

In addition to updating the rules, this version introduces new victory conditions, a shorter play time, and updated art on the 34"x22" map and 176 5/8" counters. The original counter set has been expanded and now offers players the choice of using either "classic" NATO symbology or a more modern iconic style.

The Bulge has been published in the issue #3 of "World at War" Decision Games magazine.

This is a wargame in which solitaire play can be fudged but is more usually played with two, whereby one (the “Russian player”) commands the Kremlin’s forces and the other (the “Allied player”) commands the Finnish-Swedish alliance opposed to him.

This isn’t a simulation of the “opaque (a.k.a. gray) war” techniques most recently used by the Russians in the Crimea and eastern Ukraine. Rather, it’s designed to facilitate the examination of the strategic possibilities (along with their operational undertones) inherent in this potentially larger and more drastic situation.

The crisis being modeled here, though not yet much discussed, will certainly come into being if the drift of the two “neutral” Scandinavian nations toward NATO membership continues. That would, in turn, most likely occur if – probably in reaction to the growing Muslim in-migration crisis there – a conservative government came to power in Sweden. Part of that altered worldview in Stockholm would then likely also move that government to want to join the Western alliance. Since the Finns are already allied with Sweden (and Denmark), it’s hard not to imagine such a shift wouldn’t also pull Helsinki in the same direction.

All of which would be unacceptable to Putin. His goal here would therefore be to bring off a quick and victorious blitzkrieg-like campaign against Finland, while probably also seizing the low-hanging geo-strategic fruit of Sweden’s Gotland Island. That would allow him to install a fully subservient government in Helsinki, turn the Baltic Sea into a Russian lake, and simultaneously recast Sweden into Finland’s former role: a quiet and pliant neutral.

This game can be played as a stand-alone, or it can be used as part of a new “Grand Campaign Scenario” for combined play with its parent game, Putin Strikes.

The rules are simple: each player has four towers, three pieces high, that can "boom" (fire) or "zoom" (move) a number of spaces equal to the tower's height. But with those deceptively simple ingredients, veteran designer Ty Bomba has created his masterpiece, the game that he himself acknowledges as his own best design. The trick is that the game ends when only one player's pieces remain on the board, and the player who managed to exit the most pieces off of the opponent's side of the map wins. Because of this, players can't concentrate on just blocking/attacking or just advancing, but must strike a difficult and subtle balance between the two.

The first edition of Mr. Bomba's game was significantly altered by its publisher. Here, all unnecessary ornamentation has been stripped away, presenting the designer's original vision as he had always intended, in a handsome format utilizing chunky 40mm x 40mm x 16mm wooden blocks.

(from Compass Games website:)

Proud Monster Deluxe is a Major Revision of Command's Proud Monster and Death and Destruction.

Proud Monster Deluxe is a simulation of the Russo-German War beginning with the launch of Operation Barbarossa in June of 1941, and ending in April of 1944. It is a two-player (or multi-player) strategic / operational wargame of low-to-medium complexity.

Units in Proud Monster Deluxe are typically divisions with some corps, brigades and regiments also included. Hexes are 20 miles (about 33 kilometers) across, and each turn represents about a 2 week period.

Game system

In addition to updated graphics, the major changes are Reserves and Reserve Movement phases to simulate the potential for encirclement or defensive reaction. Soviet first winter offensive rules allow the Soviets to retake parts of Russia in early 1942 as happened in history. Both sides now have offensive supply markers to show historical offensive potential and limitations. Innovative weather chits allow for weather variation without extreme weather swings biasing the game. AFV units become even more important due to AFV combat shift. Close Combat option allows for use of an alternate loss procedure and attacker advance to form a jointly-occupied hex, for example, to simulate Stalingrad's gradual fall to the Axis. The ability to fully exploit holes created by mobile assaults is limited to reserves.

The Axis forces degrade in capability over time while the Soviet forces upgrade in capability. The Axis super heavy artillery Thor and Odin, Heavy Gustav and Dora can fire before combat resolution. Besides the 1941 Free setups, 1941 historical setups are provided for both sides as well as a 1942 scenario. Seasonal offensive rules allow for special turns when special things can happen. The 2 sides show a greater disparity in capability, the Axis can do things the Soviets cannot do and vice versa. Things that work when playing the Axis may not work when playing the Soviets and vice versa.

Game components

Game components have all been improved over the originals. All graphics have been completely updated and upgraded. Counters are 9/16" and map hexes have ample space to avoid players from knocking over those stacks of counters when the fighting starts to tighten up. The four (4) maps impress upon the players the enormous expanse of the Soviet Union and the challenge for both sides to defend and overcome it. Rules are consolidated from the two original sources into one comprehensive set, with all known errata folded in, and a number of important rule changes to improve game balance and playability. In addition, the development of a definitive set of player aids will keep players playing the game instead of hunting down items in the rules.

4 maps - each map is 22"x34" with overlap
10 full sheets of 9/16" counters (2052 counters), printed both sides
1 rules book
Full color player aid charts and tables cards printed both sides on cardstock
2 6 sided dice
1 full color box and lid

Brezhnev’s War: NATO vs. the Warsaw Pact in Germany, 1980 enables two players to game the first month of a hypothesized communist invasion of Western Europe sometime between the fall of Saigon and the start of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. It was during that period the conventional “correlation of forces” between the two hostile alliances most favored the communists.

The scenario portrayed is the one that was most anticipated and feared by NATO’s intelligence analysts at the time. That is, despite their knowledge of the existence of Soviets plans to begin such a war with massive chemical and nuclear strikes, the West’s military planners gave those schemes little credence. They knew the Soviets understood such a strategy would bring on immediate nuclear retaliation by the West. That would’ve ended the war as quickly as it began – mostly likely along with all of civilization – with no winner identifiable.

What was feared then was, one fine summer day, the Soviet units in East Germany would move out from eating breakfast in their mess halls and roll across the border into West Germany. It would’ve been a “come as you are” kind of war, the aim of which would’ve been to blitz across Germany – using only conventional weaponry – in under a month.

The Soviets would then have called for a ceasefire before any nuclear or chemical weapons had been detonated or the massive economic power of the Atlantic community brought to bear. With that, West Germany – the geo-strategic lynchpin of NATO in Europe – would’ve been neutralized and its Ruhr industrial area – then as now, one of the most important manufacturing centers on the planet – entirely wrecked. That would’ve caused a shift in the global balance of power in favor of the Kremlin, setting them up to deliver the knockout blow later.

The 50” x 35” map covers the core area of the Federal Republic of Germany at 6.66 miles (10.8 km) per hex. There are 352 large-size (5/8”) unit counters, representing the divisions and brigades immediately on scene at the time, along with the masses of other units that could’ve been sent as reinforcements. Each of the 10 game turns represent three days of real time.

The turn sequence uses the classic fight-move or move-fight structure. Special rules account for heliborne units, Spetsnaz, the ultra-elite Soviet Eighth Guards and Guards Airborne Armies, East German and Czechoslovakian disloyalty, ranged Soviet artillery divisions, air power, supply, the criticality of Frankfurt for US operations, paradrops, German territorials, electronic warfare and variable Soviet victory objectives.

The overall system is simple, at about 6 on the 1-10 scale. Two experienced players can get through a match in about four to six hours.

Boom & Zoom by designer Ty Bomba is a two-player strategy game about the “wars of the future” where Laser Tower vehicles conduct fire and movement across the battlefield. This game abstracts warfare in much the same way as Checkers or Chess, with similarly deep gameplay. Quick to learn, but difficult to master, can you outmaneuver your opponent and claim the victory for your side?

Choose one of two factions - Consolidated Tech or Pan Asian - and prepare for abstract, virtual reality warfare. As a tower-jockey, you take control of several laser towers and strategize your way to make it across the board to win!

In this BattlessonTM game, players receive stackable pieces (the "Towers"), set up on a Chess-like board. With a variety of different missions to choose from, command and control your towers as they Zoom (move) and Boom (fire at other Towers) their way to the other side of the board to score. With treacherous terrain, Tower tactics, and more to add onto your game, can you push your way past every obstacle? Get onto the field with Boom & Zoom!

Game Data:

Complexity: 2 on a 9 scale
Solitaire Suitability: 2 on a 9 scale
Scale: Each player takes control of the red or blue side, each with stackable laser tower forces, and attempts to reach the other side with them.
