Shock attack: At any time except during an action, any coach can sacrifice an Interrupt card to call down a bolt of electricity on an athlete in an electricity space (indicated by a faint electricity symbol).

The wildly arcing electricity in the pit will likely result in many more knockdowns. This will give the slower Gruesomes more chances to chop and foul. Teams in general will have fewer options because more of their players will be knocked down. With few “safe” spaces on the board, teams will clump up, giving the Gruesomes an easier time wading into groups of opponents.

Chooser of the Living: While upright on a Choosing Space, take two special actions to remove all the injury tokens (if any) from one athlete in the Slaughter Box. Then, immediately relocate that athlete to any unoccupied Re-Entry space or starting space.

Chooser of the Slain: While upright on a Choosing Space, take two special actions to kill any one athlete in the Slaughter Box. That athlete is removed from the game. Unless using the optional Lasting Injury rule in League play, the athlete is resuscitated to full health for the next game.

During the Third World War, robotic forces first assaulted islands across the world. Usually, they were able to conquer and eliminate their human foes in short order. Not so in Japan. The Japanese military and civilians fought back with intractable resolve, and saved their greatest city: Tokyo. And when the war ended with a human victory, the Japanese people rebuilt more quickly than anyone else.

With the formation of the United Globe government, and banning of advanced robots, Japan quickly retooled their industrial efforts to genetics. Today, there are hundreds of gene-tech labs in the Tokyo Metrofecture (TMF). But it was the megacorporation Honshu Tek that first engineered the Katanas team genetic template.

Tapping into their rich history, Honshu Tek created a team of samurai-themed athletes that quickly became the most popular team in the TMF. Now, with many years of strong performances, the Katanas frequently break into the playoffs and have more than one championship trophy hanging in their dojo.

Attack your opponents, repeatedly. With three skilled butchers, you should concentrate on weakening opposing teams from round one. Get your butchers and slashers into the center so they can use their mobility and power to dominate your opponents. Be sure to set up field coverage with your butchers. Their automatic carve skill can really block off entire slices of the pit. No one wants to run around those guys. After you’ve thinned out your opponents, you can have your razor snag the lonely ball and start scoring goals.

It’s no coincidence that the Fury slaughterdome named the Jungle is lost deep within the vast metropolis that is the Bengali Mahaplex. With over 270 million citizens, the BMP is a huge durocrete jungle, teeming with life and motion. Finding the Fury arena is a task in itself. But, once you find it, you’ll be amazed! The dome boasts ancient Indian architecture, holographic and genetically engineered flora and fauna, and flaming doom!

Fury’s owners not only genetically engineered their team, they also genetically engineered plants to impede everyone in the pit. These neovines are attracted to movement, crawling and writhing to tangle those who run by.

While in the Fury pit, the following rules apply:

Entangling vines: The first time an athlete tries to leave an entangling space during a Move action, the athlete must make an Agility test. If the athlete does not get 2 or more knives, he trips and falls down in that space. This ends his movement and no points are scored. Entangling spaces are indicated by the green leaf in the center of a space.

Fireblast: Every coach gains this ability while in the Fury pit.

At irregular intervals, the meat grinder and the launchers belch forth great gouts of flame! At any time except during an action, any coach can sacrifice an Interrupt card call forth such a conflagration from the meat grinder or any one specified launcher.

Perhaps the toughest team in the league, the Gruesomes have yet to prove themselves as contenders to the Slaughterbrawl crown. Like their other teams inspired by classic literature, Chemozoic Incorporated contracted Honeydew Labs to create this team genetic template. And while the athletes certainly look the part, their traits and skills have made it difficult to rack up the victories necessary to snag the championship.

The Gruesomes as a team rely on their resilience and sheer strength to dominate opponents and survive attacks. Unfortunately, they lack the hand-eye coordination and speed to have full access to all possible Slaughterball strategies. Indeed, their shooting game is perennially inadequate. Even so, previous coaches have managed to build them into a respectable foe over the course of a season by training them with new skills and concentrating on the strategies explained below.

Coaching the Gruesomes is a challenging task, but your victories will be that much sweeter knowing it was your coaching ability, not the athleticism of your athletes, that won the day. They are slower and less accurate than other teams, and as such you cannot rely on a shooting game to win. Instead, you should doggedly attack your opponents, even taking risky chops to knock them down. You should be chopping every turn. And get everyone moved toward the center of the pit as soon as possible. Field coverage is imperative for the Gruesomes, so they are always in range to attack someone.

Your athletes’ resilience will help them stay out of the Slaughter Box, and the great Brawling values will usually result in chop success. Once you have your opponent on the ground, send your slashers and butchers over to foul them on the ground and then cancel any Penalty cards with the Scare Ref skill.

Interrupt cards are very important to your fouling strategy, so be sure to cycle through your hand quickly. If you don’t have any Interrupt cards, discard your whole hand to find some. Being able to attack prone opponents and get four extra dice is paramount. Especially when you can avoid Penalties.

Legion is one of the few teams in the Global Slaughterball League that is completely owned by a regional government. In this case the Metroplex Roma subsidiary SPQR. Current SPQR CEO Tiberius Antonius Caesar-Caesar has dedicated vast sums of tax revenues to develop and market Legion into a juggernaut of popularity and success. Thanks to Caesar-Caesar’s guidance over the past two decades, Legion’s legions of fans have propelled the team to be one of the most financially successful in the league.

Legion is a thoroughly disciplined team of well-armored athletes, each with their own skills to contribute to the team. They excel at cooperating with each other to overcome opponents through teamwork. The cleavers are the foundation of this team unity. They are tactical geniuses who grant all teammates a bonus to their tests, plus they can hand out additional Onslaught tokens!
It will require an experienced coach to fully understand and lead Legion to victory. You’ll have to familiarize yourself with their impressive list of skills, and stay aware of every team member at all times to make sure you utilize them to their fullest potential. Legion is one of the most complicated teams to lead to victory, so be sure you are up to the task.

Even though all Legion athletes have strong skill sets, it is the cleavers’ tactical leadership that propel them to excellence. The value of more onslaught tokens cannot be overemphasized, and you should exploit that ability every turn. Also, do not forget the Leadership bonus that each of your athletes earns from the cleavers, and that you can add up the +1 bonus to tests from each of your cleavers in the pit.
To retain the extra tactical choices that they provide, the cleavers should be protected at all times. Do not expose them to attack or you’ll lose them to the Slaughter Box, along with their bonus dice and onslaught tokens.

Also, don’t forget the other athletes on the team, who also have great skills and traits. The razor is well-armored, with just a slight reduction in Speed. The slashers can double-team opponents for vicious effect. Even the butcher is better than average with his Awesome Brute skill. And all Legion athletes can stand up adjacent teammates with Help Up. Once you learn how to synergize all these skills, you’re well on your way to invincibility!

Metroplex Roma boasts an exact replica of the ancient Roman Colosseum, but at twice the size! Plus, it sits atop the Caesarium Arcology, making it one of the most recognizable points of the Roman skyline.

In ancient times, gladiators fought each other and wild animals in the Colosseum. SPQR has opted to emulate this in the Legion’s home arena by unleashing random mavericks into the games. These athletes owe allegiance to no team, and earn money for each athlete that they slaughter! This results in a very chaotic game as the wild mavericks engage in all sorts of mayhem. Indeed, sometimes they even help a team that they might like. Often, Legion benefits from this maverick benevolence, making opposing teams wonder if there is some corruption going on. No proof of such has ever been presented, however.

Of course, some mavericks are more popular than others. Simba Khan elicits the most fan excitement, of course. Other butchers are also favorites, such as The Barbarian, Warren Johnston, Sandy Petersen, the Unspeakable One, and Four-Fisted Farouk. Razors are the least favorite, of course, because the fans want wild mavericks who can inflict maximum damage.

Special rules:
The Legion pits include spaces called Maverick Pillars, indicated by the M. These spaces block movement and no athlete can enter them. However, random mavericks appear on them to wreak havoc with all teams.

When the goals are opened, the first maverick is revealed. Draw a random maverick card and place the matching maverick figure on a random Maverick Pillar. This is a Wild Maverick, who owes allegiance to no single team. It is his job to cause as much mayhem as possible, attacking and thwarting all teams.

To simulate this, each coach can control any wild maverick during their Onslaught phase.

And every last one of them is a fan of Fury! Developed decades ago as the very first exotic Slaughterball team, Fury is a perennial favorite not just in India, but in all 72 metroplexes. Their distinctive feline beauty and grace, coupled with the savagery of their gameplay, has earned them a place in seven of the last ten Slaughterbrawls.

Fury’s greatest strength, their savage claws that can rip other neohumans to shreds, are also their greatest weakness. These felinoids are very inept at handling the ball, and their razors are the worst shooters in the league. Fortunately, Fury razors are also the fastest, so they can usually get pretty close to the goals to take easy shots.

So, you’re not going to win on goals. You better pounce on your opponents and do some damage. Thanks to the Savagery skill, you’ll be racking up the slaughter points. Don’t save those reactive cards (Penalty, Lost Momentum, etc.). You need to be sacrificing your cards to send opponents to the Slaughter Box early. Soon enough your opponents will team up against you to eliminate your butchers and slashers. So, attack with them early and often.
