In the abstract strategy game MOD X, each player has 14 game pieces and 18 score markers, with the goal being to reach an established number of points (determined by the number of players). Players take turns placing a game piece on the board and trying to create scoring patterns – an "X", a "+", or a line, with each pattern requiring five pieces – while simultaneously trying to block their opponents from scoring with these same patterns.

After creating a successful pattern, a player places score markers on the board marking these spaces. Players can lose their score markers, however, if opponents create scoring patterns over these score markers on a later turn.

The game ends when one player reaches the established number of points (and wins) or a player runs out of pieces; in this latter case the player with the most points wins.

Easy to Learn and Packed with Variety

Though the box says 15 and up, MOD X is really fun for all ages eight and up. And in addition to making the X, Plus, and Five-in-a-row pattern to score points, players also have the option to make a combination pattern or the ultimate pattern called the instant win. A combination pattern occurs when the placing of one X Piece joins two or more game patterns, and there are dozens of possible combination patterns that a player can pretty easily make. Lastly, The instant win pattern happens when the replacing of Wild clear X pieces make any of the three game patterns using all five of the Wild X Pieces. An instant win is much like a checkmate in Chess, and obviously the most difficult to make, but still very doable. MOD X is fun to play in all modes, either two, three, or with four players or teams. If you enjoy playing abstract strategy games you will thoroughly enjoy playing MOD X.

Mod X is a deceptive-looking game that packs a lot of fun and strategy into a small package! The game seems to combine connect 4 and tic tac toe, and pump it full of steroids! The result is an abstract strategic game for 2-4 players. The goal of the game is to score a certain amount of points by completing patterns with your pieces. Beware though because you can lose points just as fast as you earn them, if other players happen to make patterns on squares previously scored by you. The implementation of Wild pieces adds another layer of depth to the game as you use them to help you win.
